The Times journalist Paul Joyce has provided an update on Virgil van Dijk and his contract negotiation with Liverpool.
The Liverpool captain is one of a trio of the club’s first-team stars who are in the last six months of their contract.
The Dutchman, alongside Trent Alexander-Arnold and Mohamed Salah, could leave Liverpool at the end of this season unless the club successfully secures a contract extension in the coming months.
Liverpool have continued negotiating with all three players, and there is a feeling that Van Dijk will renew his deal.
The 33-year-old remains a key part of the Liverpool squad and is valued highly by Arne Slot.
Although he recently admitted to being unsure of what the future holds for him at Liverpool, he is said to be keen on remaining at the club.
With the contract saga rumbling on and no official update on Van Dijk’s future still in sight, Paul Joyce has provided an insider perspective on the matter.
Latest Paul Joyce update on Van Dijk
According to Paul Joyce, Van Dijk remains keen on staying at Liverpool, and the club is expecting him to extend his stay beyond this summer.
“He (Van Dijk) has made no secret that he wants to stay, and there appears a determination on his part to prove to Liverpool that, despite turning 34 this summer, he remains at the peak of his powers,” Joyce wrote for The Times.
“There remains an expectation around Liverpool that Van Dijk will stay at the club he joined seven years ago and that he can uphold his exacting standards for a couple of more years at least?
Life without him remains unthinkable.
Van Dijk celebrated his 300th appearance for Liverpool against Ipswich Town at the weekend.
During his first triple century of games for Liverpool, Van Dijk has won 209 games, with 47 draws and 44 losses.
The numbers speak for themselves, placing Van Dijk in the pantheon of all-time greats to have played at Anfield.
